Budget Dog Food: How to Choose Affordable, Quality Nutrition?

The Price of the Bag Is Not Necessarily the Real Cost

When looking for less expensive dog food, the first instinct is often to compare the price of the bags. However, this is not necessarily the best way to determine which food is actually the most economical.

Two foods can have very different prices while having much more similar daily costs. The reason is simple: the amount you need to feed your dog each day can vary considerably from one food to another.

A food with a lower price per bag may therefore require a much larger daily serving. The bag will cost less to purchase, but it may not last as long.

At Heidi & cie, we therefore prefer to compare the daily cost of feeding your dog rather than simply looking at the price displayed on the bag.

How Do You Compare Two Dog Foods?

The best starting point is usually the food your dog is currently eating. We look at its formulation, ingredients and, most importantly, the recommended daily feeding amount.

Read the Ingredient List

The ingredient list helps you better understand what is actually in a dog food. We look at the sources of protein, the grains used and the various ingredients that make up the recipe.

At Heidi & cie, we have chosen not to carry foods containing wheat or corn. We also avoid foods containing by-products.

Our position regarding by-products does require some clarification. We have nothing against organs when they are clearly identified as ingredients. Liver, heart and other organs can absolutely be part of a dog food. When they are clearly listed in the ingredient list, we know exactly what is being used.

What we prefer to avoid is a general term such as “by-products”, since this designation does not allow us to know exactly which ingredients are being used.

These criteria automatically eliminate several inexpensive foods commonly found in grocery stores and large retail chains.

Your Dog’s Needs Also Need to Be Considered

Affordable food is not necessarily suitable for every dog. Your choice should also take into account your dog’s characteristics and individual needs.

Life Stage

A puppy is growing rapidly and has different nutritional needs from an adult or senior dog. It is therefore important to choose a complete food that is appropriate for your dog’s life stage.

Age, size, activity level and overall condition are all factors that can influence your choice of dog food.

Specific Needs

Some dogs also have specific needs or food sensitivities. In these situations, it may be necessary to choose a different formulation or protein source.

Food designed to meet specific needs may cost a little more. The goal is then to find the best balance between your dog’s needs, food quality and your available budget.

All of the options presented below meet our main selection criteria, including no wheat, no corn and no by-products.

Lifetime Dog Food

Lifetime is a particularly interesting option when looking for affordable dog food.

Considering its price, Lifetime meets our main selection criteria: no by-products, no wheat and no corn.

The available formulas include chicken, lamb and fish recipes.

Lifetime also offers grain-free formulas, although these are generally more expensive.

Pulsar Dog Food

Pulsar, made by Horizon, is another interesting option for pet owners looking for quality dog food at a reasonable price.

This grain-free food also meets our selection criteria and is available in several formulas, including chicken, turkey, fish, lamb and pork.

Taiga for Large Breed Dogs

For large dogs, Taiga dog food from Horizon is also worth considering.

It is available in grain-free chicken and pork formulas. The 15.9 kg bags can also provide good value for money for owners of large dogs.

Acana Classic for Dogs

The Acana Classic line is also an interesting option when looking for quality dog food at a reasonable price.

The bags can be as large as 14.5 kg, and the Prairie Poultry chicken formula is one of the more affordable options in the line.

Fromm Classic for Dogs

The Fromm Classic line, available by special order, is also an interesting choice for puppies and adult dogs.

It is available in both dry food and canned formulas. Although it contains grains, the first ingredients include chicken meal and chicken. The grains used include brown rice, barley, oats and white rice.

Fromm Classic is therefore an interesting option for pet owners looking for quality dog food at a reasonable price.

Summit Dog Food

The Summit dog food line is an entry-level range from Canadian company Petcurean, which also produces the NOW FRESH and GO! lines.

Summit uses grains that we consider worthwhile and is a reasonably priced option for pet owners who want to maintain good food quality while keeping their budget under control.

This food is available by special order at Heidi & cie.

Some Raw Dog Foods Can Also Be Affordable

Complete raw dog food is generally more expensive than kibble. However, some options can remain competitive, particularly when comparing the daily cost rather than simply the price of the product.

Among the brands we carry are 5 Star Raw Foods, Pür Évolution and Big Country Raw, which also offers 30 lb formats.

Choosing Dog Food Based on Your Dog’s Size

Your dog’s size directly affects the cost of feeding them. A small dog obviously consumes much less food than a large-breed dog.

For a small dog, the daily food budget can therefore remain reasonable even with higher-quality food or even a raw diet.

For a large dog, it is more important to pay attention to the recommended daily feeding amount. Two foods can have very different costs depending on how much is required each day.

For example, for a large dog weighing approximately 50 kg, the daily amount can vary considerably depending on the food chosen. In some situations, it can range from approximately 3.5 cups to 6 cups per day.
